What is SM?
A child may exhibit comfortable speech in familiar environments but struggle to communicate in various social settings, such as school, playdates, restaurants, or with relatives. This difficulty often arises when interacting with unfamiliar individuals, including relatives, neighbours, and peers.
The challenges in communication are frequently associated with anxiety.
Children displaying signs of selective mutism may demonstrate extreme shyness, minimal or absent eye contact, and a lack of physical expression. They may also isolate themselves in group situations, engage in compulsive behaviors, and face difficulties with eating, drinking, toileting and having their photo taken.
Selective mutism can persist into adolescence and adulthood without intervention, leading to challenges in forming friendships and relationships, achieving job satisfaction, and experiencing mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. However, there is hope, and assistance is available.
