Hello
I am Joanna Turner, the founder of the Nurturing Voices Initiative. As a parent with extensive experience in selective mutism and anxiety, as well as a professional Arts therapist and child counsellor, I leverage my expertise in creative arts therapy to develop innovative therapeutic approaches that empower young individuals while minimizing distress and anxiety. The initiative was established to facilitate the sharing and exploration of holistic support methods for ourselves and those we care for, fostering personal growth and happiness.
My Story
I pursued a career as an arts therapist 15 years ago, and one of my initial clients was a child with selective mutism, which sparked my growing interest in this area. My professional experience expanded to include working with children facing various challenges, such as communication, learning, physical, and mental health issues, as well as involvement in adoption and fostering. Over time, my practice evolved to become more trauma-informed and client-centered. As a parent of children with additional needs, including Selective Mutism, Anxiety, ADHD, ASD, and difficulties related to Emotionally Based School Avoidance, I recognized the necessity for further research. Consequently, I have published several academic papers focusing on a trauma-informed approach to supporting individuals with selective mutism, presented at international conferences, and co-hosted the Selective Mutism International Conference annually, as well as publishing a children's book , Piper's voice, and being an active trustee of the SMIRA charity. Further training in primitive reflex integration, safe and sound protocol, neurosequential methods of therapeutics, polyvagal theory, Makaton and BSL have all helped influence my approach. My journey as a parent has profoundly influenced my approach to this field and I hope my expereince and knowledge can support you on your journey too!
